Economic Inequality
By Frank Stilwell

Contrary to the popular myth about an egalitarian or classless society, there is a striking and growing degree of inequality in income and wealth in Australia. Economic Inequality has increased over the last decade. There is a clear polarisation between the poor and the super-rich, with a shrinking middle-class.

Frank Stilwell asks: Why is inequality increasing? What policies could reverse this trend? What are the economic, social, political and environmental consequences of inequality? Would the pursuit of greater equality involve any sacrifice of economic efficiency?

Frank Stilwell is Associate Professor of Economics and Director of the Political Economy courses at the University of Sydney.
